London Reuters...Although it occurs most often in mothers, fathers can also suffer PND and it can influence their childrens early behaviour,British researchers said on friday...boys seem to be particularly affected by depressed Dads and have twice as many behaviour problems in their early years as other children. Our findings indicate that paternal depression hasa specific persisting detrimental effect on their children's behavioural and emotional development, said Dr Paul Ramchandani of Oxford University...in a report in the Lancet medical journal Ramchandani and his team studied behaviour and mental health couples in the 1st few weeks after the birth and shortly before the childs 2nd birthday...
post natal depression in women though is to do with hormonal imbalances, one can only imagine that in men it has to do with the culture shock of sleepless nights, lack of intimacy and feelings of rejection because the baby seems to have taken his place ..
They also assessed their children's emotional development and behaviour at 3 yrs old from questions put to the mothers...The relationship between boys behaviour and depression in their fathers is striking Ramchandani said it may be that boys are specifically sensitive to the effects of pareting by fathers, perhaps because of different involvement between fathers and sons..PND is a well known phenomenon, affecting about 13% of new mothers..its symptoms range from mild to severe... An earlier study found that 3% of new fathers showed signs of depression after the birth .

It's rough on fathers too to have children, on good fathers at least. Many people forget that, how immportant fathers can be, and how the father takes on a lot of responsibilities too and could feel depressed in the adjustment period.
Yes the emphasis is always on the mother's health, often the father can feel excluded from the whole process of child rearing..
yeah, the faterh has usually only the pre production duties, so to speak but is less involved in the actual development and is often too busy to take care of maintainance once the product has been launched and the customer service of some dads certainly isn't up to par either <grin>
Well, I think there is a lot more to it than that. As I think I said in a previous post, when you have a baby, the whole dynamic of the family changes. And for some men, the way they viewed their partner also changes. Now bearing in mind that before the woman had a baby, she is her partner’s lover, then when she gives birth, that changes to an extent. Not that she isn’t, but her role becomes extended. She becomes the caregiver to that child, and to an extent, the partner gets pushed out. If a woman breast feeds, the partner can find that difficult, because breasts, that were previously seen as objects of pleasure, now become the food source for the baby, for some men, witnessing their partner actually giving birth can cause them to go off her physically, the thought of a baby being born where once that partner was is, for some, too much to bear. So … word of advice, stick to holding your partner’s hand when she gives birth, grins. But for some men they can feel as if they have been pushed out, after all, often a woman is unable to, or unwilling to get physically close to her partner for a period after she has had a baby, either because it is not possible, if there have been any complications, or she simply doesn’t feel like it because having a new born baby is a very tiring experience. So I guess for some there can be a major feeling of rejection, and for some women, they are so caught up in their new baby that they can fail to see it.
